WORLD AGENDA

World events scheduled for June

By Jordi Bou

June 1, 2018 - June 30, 2018 - The World Agenda gives a preview of world events scheduled for June, such as the FIFA World Cup in Russia, the G7 summit in Canada, and the general elections in Turkey.

Events include:

June, France: President Emmanuel Macron’s controversial immigration bill comes before the Senate, amid claims that it penalises asylum seekers and unreasonably extends detention times. Reforms approved by France’s lower house, the National Assembly, would shorten the deadline for applications and double the time illegal migrants can be detained

Jun 5, U.S.: Fifty years ago presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was shot and fatally wounded at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, hours after winning the California presidential primaries in the 1968 election. The brother of slain President John F. Kennedy died in the early hours of the next day

Jun 7, UK: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opens in Britain and other capitals, ahead of its Jun 22 U.S. premiere. In 2015 Jurassic World beat The Avengers in global box office takings but 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War has laid down a strong challenge. It grossed $1bn worldwide in its first week of release

Jun 8-9, Canada: U.S. President Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to pull out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and reinstate sanctions against the Islamic Republic – to the “regret” of France, Germany and the UK – will be high on the agenda when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hosts G7 leaders in Quebec

Jun 14-Jul 15, Russia: With a global TV audience of 3.2 billion four years ago, all eyes will be on Russia for the 21st FIFA World Cup – the first time the football tournament has been held in Eastern Europe. The 32 teams include defending champions Germany and newcomers, Iceland and Panama

Jun 26, Poland: A dispute with the European Union over judicial reform gives the former Communist-led country until today to reassure the bloc it is not flouting the rule of law. Sanctions could follow if the EU is unconvinced

Jun 24, Turkey: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expects to win a third term in snap elections after 2017’s referendum gave him greater powers, moving Turkey ever further from its status as a parliamentary democracy

Jun 24, Saudi Arabia: A decades-old ban on women driving is lifted. Any woman aged 18 or over can apply for a driving license and learn to drive through women-only driving schools in five cities across the ultra-conservative kingdom – the only place in the world where such a prohibition was enforced
