Queen to start London Marathon 2018

By Chris Dinsdale

April 22, 2018 - The 38th London Marathon takes place, starting from Blackheath in Greenwich and finishing in The Mall. Queen Elizabeth II will be the official starter for the 2018 race, stepping onto a special podium in front of the Round Tower at Windsor Castle to push the start button at 10:00am. Live coverage of the start ceremony will be relayed to the big screens at Blackheath to set around 40,000 runners on their way.

Two of the greatest marathon fields in history will contest the elite men’s and women’s races at the London Marathon when last year’s champions Daniel Wanjiru and Mary Keitany return to defend their titles.

In addition to Wanjiru (Kenya), the men’s race will feature the three greatest distance runners of their generation. Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya), Kenenisa Bekele (Ethiopia) and Mo Farah (Britain) have a combined total of eight Olympic gold medals and 12 World Championship golds between them.

Kenya’s Keitany will again go head-to-head with Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba, the 2017 runner-up in London who went on to win the Chicago Marathon in October.
