April 4, 2018 - April 15, 2018 - The 2018 Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event taking place in the city of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Over 5,000 athletes from 70 member states of the Commonwealth of Nations, mostly former territories of the British Empire, are scheduled to compete at Gold Coast 2018.

The Commonwealth Games was first held in 1930, and has taken place every four years since (excepting 1942 and 1946, which were cancelled due to World War II). The 2018 event will be the fifth time that Australia has hosted the Commonwealth Games.

In 2016 it was announced that seven new events for women would be added to the programme, resulting in an equal number of events for men and women for the first time in any major multi-sport event. In total 275 events in 18 sports will be contested.

The medals were designed by Australian Indigenous artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, and produced by the Royal Australian Mint. Their design was inspired by the coastline of Gold Coast along with Indigenous culture. Approximately 1,500 medals will be created, each measuring approximately 63mm in diameter and weighing between 138 and 163 grams.
