China military spending quickens amid modernisation

March 5, 2018 - China’s defence spending looks set to increase at the fastest rate for three years as President Xi Jinping pursues a “world-class” military, capable of reaching far beyond his country’s borders.

The figure of of 1.11 trillion yuan ($175bn) was announced at the annual meeting of People's Congress (NPC), which is also expected to remove the two-term presidential limit, enabling Xi Jinping to remain in office indefinitely.
