New Russian stealth fighter spotted in Syria

By Mike Tyler

February 23, 2018 - Russia appears to have sent its most advanced fighter jet to Syria. The fifth-generation Su-57, which is still a prototype and not ready for combat, is in the same class as U.S. stealth aircraft such as the F-22.

Unverified pictures and video footage circulating on social media purport to show two Su-57s, also known as the PAK FA and T-50, landing at Russia’s Khmeimim air base in Syria’s Latakia province.

The Kremlin has already used Syria as an excuse to showcase new hardware, and it may want to market the Su-57 as having been combat-tested. Currently, only 12 of the jets are on order as Russia seeks funding to expand the programme.
