How “bump-stock” devices work

By Duncan Mil

February 21, 2018 - U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an order to ban bump-stock devices which increase the rate of fire of semi-automatic firearms and were used by a gunman who killed 58 Las Vegas concert-goers last year.

Trump -- under pressure from angry, grieving students from a Florida high school where a gunman killed 17 people last week -- directed the U.S. Justice Department to complete a proposed rule that would treat bump stocks as machine guns, which could outlaw them in the United States.

The move came in response to an October massacre in Las Vegas, where a gunman used a bump-stock-equipped rifle to kill 58 people.

The powerful National Rifle Association, which has opposed bump-stock restrictions, said it could not comment on Trump’s proposed ban until it saw the specifics of the regulation.
