Migration crisis builds as Venezuelans flee decline

By Mike Tyler

February 20, 2018 - Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans are fleeing across borders to escape the growing political and economic crisis in their country, leaving nearby countries straining to cope with the migrant wave.

Venezuela’s economy continues to unravel, with inflation expected to hit 13,000% this year. Rampant shortages leave stores empty, and many hospitals are ill-equipped to treat even basic problems. Malnutrition is rising, and some parents who are unable to feed their children have turned them over to orphanages. Violence is prevalent, and security forces have been accused of extrajudicial killings and other abuses.

Despite broad unpopularity, President Nicolas Maduro is expected to retain power in a April 22 election under conditions the U.S. and others say are stacked against the opposition.
