UAE to open Arab world’s first nuclear power plant

By Mike Tyler

February 13, 2018 - The United Arab Emirates is due to commission the Arab world’s first nuclear power station in 2018. The Barakah plant’s four reactors are expected to supply up to 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity needs by 2020.

The UAE is just one of several countries in the Middle East and North Africa, including Egypt and Saudi Arabia, that have announced plans to build nuclear power plants over the next decade.

Those countries have justified their pursuit of nuclear energy in the desire to meet rising demands for electricity, but the reactor-building spree can also be viewed as a response to Iran’s nuclear programme.
