Air raids dealt serious blow to Iran and Syria

By Mike Tyler

February 12, 2018 - Israel and Iran have moved closer to confrontation in Syria after rising tensions erupted into the most serious standoff between the sides since the Syrian civil war began seven years ago.

Israel’s military says it hit 12 targets in Syria, including three Syrian anti-aircraft battteries and four sites belonging to Iran, after an Iranian drone penetrated its airspace.

One Israeli F-16 was hit by Syrian fire as it returned to Israel from a mission targeting the drone base, leading to the massive Israeli retaliation. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Sunday that at least six Syrian troops and allied militiamen were killed as a result of the airstrikes.

Saturday’s confrontation comes amid Israeli warnings that it won’t let Syria become an Iranian base or a conduit for weapons bound for Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon. Iran and allied militias have fought alongside government troops against rebels and Islamist factions in the Syrian war.
