February 26, 2017: There were red faces at the Oscars after the movie La La Land was wrongly announced as Best Picture. Moonlight emerged as the real winner

February 27, 1933: The Nazis claimed a Communist conspiracy after fire gutted the Reichstag in Berlin. A Dutchman, Marius van der Lubbe, was executed for starting the fire

February 28, 1953: James Watson and Francis Crick discovered that the structure of DNA, the molecule containing human genes, was a double helix with two intertwining strands

March 1, 1498: Vasco da Gama discovered what is now Mozambique during his voyage to India, a voyage that paved the way for Portugal to establish a colonial empire in Asia

March 2, 1933: The movie King Kong had its world premiere, featuring special effects culminating in the giant ape swatting planes from atop the Empire State Building

March 3, 1923: Time magazine was launched in the United States. It has the largest circulation for a weekly news magazine, with a global readership of 26 million
