Burning tanker off Chinese coast in danger of exploding

By Jordi Bou

January 8, 2018 - Fears of an environmental disaster in the East China Sea are growing as a tanker continues to leak oil days after colliding with a cargo ship on Sunday. The Sanchi, carrying 136,000 tonnes of ultra light crude, collided with a Chinese bulk ship, leaving its 32 crew members missing.

Tanker incidents causing large oil spills have steadily reduced from an average 24.5 a year in the 1970s to 1.7 on average per year since 2010, according to the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF).
