January 28, 1813: Jane Austin’s novel Pride and Prejudice was published. One of the most popular novels in English literature, it has frequently been adapted for film and television

January 29, 2015: All 239 passengers and crew of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 were officially declared dead. The plane disappeared in March 2014 remains missing to this day

January 30, 1948: Mahatma Gandhi, who led India to independence from British rule through his philosophy of non- violent civil disobedience, was assassinated by a Hindu extremist

January 31, 1918: The newly established Soviet Union used the Julian Calendar for the last day, bringing it into line with other countries using the Gregorian Calendar

February 1, 2003: All seven astronauts died when the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated on re-entry to the atmosphere; debris had damaged the shuttle’s wing at launch

February 2, 1943: The last of the German 6th Army surrendered at Stalingrad. Some 91,000 men, of the initial 500,000 troops, were force-marched to Soviet detention camps

28 years ago — April 2, 1991 — the original Graphic News launched using a precursor to today’s websites that used email technology. These enabled infographics to be delivered electronically around the world over telephone lines. What was possible was very limited - It took 10 minutes for a 100K file to download.

Since then delivery speeds and website technology have moved on. The new website will offer the best online experience possible now, adding many new features (and offering new opportunities for the future), but still enabling existing users to select and download infographics and enjoy the distinct brand of visual journalism that is Graphic News.
