Golden Globes winners 2018

By Duncan Mil

January 8, 2018 - “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” won four Globes, including best movie drama, becoming the film to beat at the Oscars, while “Lady Bird” received two trophies for best comedy and best actress in a comedy for Saoirse Ronan.

“The Shape of Water” was honoured in two categories -- best director and best score. Gary Oldman won the best actor in a drama, for playing Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” “Coco” was named the best-animated film, and “I, Tonya” was recognised with Allison Janney’s win for the best-supporting actress.

The Golden Globes mark the start of Hollywood’s glamorous and prestigious award season. The season then comes to an end with the most significant night in showbiz -- the 90th Academy Awards on March 4, 2018.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, an organisation of showbiz journalists and photographers, hosts the Golden Globes. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), a 6,000-strong group made up of film industry professionals including actors, directors and producers, organise the Academy Awards -- or the Oscars as they are more commonly known.

Between 1980 and 2017, the winners of the Globes Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Directing awards have had a 50 percent chance of going on to win an Oscar.
