Democrats win Alabama Senate seat

By Duncan Mil

December 13, 2017 - Democrat Doug Jones has emerged as the winner of a U.S. Senate seat for Alabama after a bitter campaign against Republican Roy Moore. The victory narrows the Republican majority in the Senate to 51-49.

The result is an embarrassment for President Donald Trump and a disaster for Republicans in Washington as one of the reddest of red states elected its first Democratic senator in 25 years.

The victory by Jones, a former U.S. attorney best known for prosecuting Ku Klux Klansmen, threatens already-uncertain Republican tax, budget and health proposals and injects tremendous energy into the Democratic Party’s early push to reclaim House and Senate majorities in 2018 mid-term elections.
