January 14, 2016: The WHO announced the end of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, which caused over 11,000 deaths. Liberia was the last country to be declared free of the virus

January 15, 1943: Work on the new Pentagon building, headquarters of the U.S. Defence Department, was completed, making it the largest office building in the world

January 16, 1872: The Orient Express steamed into Istanbul, becoming the first train to link Turkey with Europe. A byword for luxury, the original service ran from 1883

January 17, 1942: U.S. prizefighter Muhammad Ali, the first world heavyweight boxing champion to win the title three times, was born as Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky

January 18, 1944: The World War II siege of Leningrad was broken by Russian forces after 900 days during which almost one million civilians died in the beleaguered city

January 19, 1943: U.S. singer Janis Joplin was born in Texas. Her uninhibited style made Joplin one of the most acclaimed women in rock before her premature death at age 27

January 20, 1981: Iran freed all 52 hostages held captive in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran for 444 days, timing their release for the same day that U.S. President Jimmy Carter left office
