Mnangagwa to become president of Zimbabwe

By Jordi Bou

November 24, 2017 - Zimbabwe’s former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa is scheduled to be sworn in as the country’s interim leader on Friday, the state broadcaster reports, following Robert Mugabe’s resignation after 37 years of rule.

Mnangagwa is expected to return to Zimbabwe on Wednesday more than two weeks after Mugabe fired him triggering a political firestorm that ended the 93-year-old's rule.

The swearing-in will take place at 08.30GMT at the 60,000 seat National Sports Stadium on the outskirts of Harare.

Mnangagwa is a former justice and defense minister who served as Mugabe's enforcer, earning him the nickname “Crocodile.”

Opposition supporters claim he was instrumental in the army killings of thousands of people in the 1980s.
