Mugabe resigns after 37 years
By Jordi Bou
November 17, 2017 - Zimbabwe’s army appears to be lining up a government of national unity, headed by former deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa, following the resignation of Robert Mugabe after 37 years in power.
Mugabe resigned by letter, saying his decision was voluntary and that he had made it to allow a smooth transition of power.
The surprise announcement halted an impeachment hearing that had begun against him and sparked celebrations in the streets.
