Zimbabwe army seizes control in apparent coup
November 15, 2017 - Zimbabwe’s army has seized control of the country and detained 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe but denied that it is a coup.
On November 6, Mugabe sacked vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, clearing the way for his 52-year-old wife Grace Mugabe to succeed him as president.
Just 24 hours after army chief General Constantino Chiwenga threatened to intervene to end a purge of Mnangagwa and his allies in Mugabe’s ZANU-PF, soldiers overran ZBC, Zimbabwe's state broadcaster.
