Tennis Davis Cup Final 2017

By Chris Dinsdale

November 24, 2017 - November 26, 2017 - France and Belgium contest the Davis Cup Final in Lille. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the world number 15, leads a French team hoping to claim their first Davis Cup title since 2001, while Belgium, led by world number 8 David Goffin, are making their second appearance in the final in three years after losing to Great Britain in 2015.

A victory for France would put them level with Great Britain in joint third-place on the all-time list of Davis Cup champions with 10 titles, behind the USA (32) and Australia (28).

The tournament was founded in 1899 by Dwight F Davis and three other members of the Harvard University tennis team. Davis commissioned and paid for the trophy with his own money. The competition was first played in 1900 between the USA and Great Britain, with victory going to the Americans.

The Davis Cup went on to become the premier international team event in men’s tennis, contested annually between teams from 125 competing countries in a knock-out format.
