PYEONGCHANG 2018

Principles behind the Olympic medal design

By Ninian Carter

February 9, 2018 - February 25, 2018 - Two hundred and twenty two medals will be awarded across 102 events at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. The medals were designed by Seoul-based industrial designer Sukwoo Lee.

The jagged front of the medals were formed from extrusions of the letters of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet that dates back to the 15th century.

The back of the medals shows the winner’s sports discipline, event and the Games emblem.

The medals will hang from teal and red-coloured ribbons decorated with letters from the Hangeul alphabet.
