Overseas student enrolment in U.S. falls

Graphic News

November 13, 2017 -- The number of international students enrolling in U.S. universities has fallen by seven percent since Donald Trump was elected president last year, according to an Institute of International Education survey.

A survey of 522 colleges and universities in the U.S. found that almost half of institutions (45 percent) reported a fall in international student numbers for the 2017-18 academic year, while 31 percent recorded an increase and one in four (24 percent) said no change.

Universities cited a mix of factors for the drop, including an uncertain U.S. social and political climate, visa delays or denials, and President Trump’s travel bans as well as fears for the personal safety of international students.
