Honda Acura NSX

Graphic News

October 26, 2017 -- Honda’s Acura NSX combines internal combustion and electric thrust for blistering off-the-line starts, a top speed of over 300km/h and a choice of drive modes, from Quiet to Sport, Sport-Plus and Track.

Conceived in the mid-1980s, Honda’s original “New Sportscar eXperimental” — inspired by the F-16 fighter jet — went on sale from 1990 to 2005.

A successor planned for 2010, powered by a V10 engine, was abandoned during the same economic downturn that resulted in Honda quitting F1.

The job finally fell to a small team in Honda’s U.S. division in Marysville, Ohio, bolstered by original NSX engineers from Japan.

From a 2012 prototype, powered by a transverse-mounted normally aspirated powertrain, came a decision to create an all-new longitudinally mounted, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine. The V6 is mated to an electric motor and nine-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox to drive the rear wheels, while two e-motors power the front wheels. (Story: Neil Winton)
