November 19, 1917: Indira Gandhi, twice prime minister of India, was born. The daughter of India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, she was assassinated in 1984

November 20, 1947: Britain’s future Queen Elizabeth II married Lt. Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark who renounced his titles to marry the princess

November 21, 2013: A wave of protests demanding closer European integration began in Kiev’s Maidan Square. It led to revolution and the fall of Ukraine’s pro-Russian president

November 22, 2005: Angela Merkel formally became Germany’s first female Chancellor. She won a fourth consecutive term in office in the federal elections of September 2017

November 23, 2005: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became Africa’s first elected female head of state when she won Liberia’s first presidential election after 15 years of civil war

November 24, 1642: Dutch navigator Abel Tasman discovered what is now Tasmania. He named it Van Diemen’s Land, after the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies

November 25, 2016: Fidel Castro, former president of Cuba, died aged 90. Supporters praised him as a champion of socialism but his critics viewed him as a ruthless dictator
