October 15, 2017 - October 21, 2017 - Graphics show birthdays and anniversaries on each day for the week.This week features Mughal emperor Akbar the Great, the Jungle camp at Calais, the first Cadillac built in Detroit, the purchase of Alaska by the United States, Black Monday on Wall Street, the last major naval battle between wooden war ships, and the first electric lightbulb.

October 15, 1542: Akbar the Great, the third Mughal emperor, was born. Under his rule the empire expanded to encompass most of northern and central India

October 16, 2016: French authorities began clearing the makeshift camp at Calais known as the Jungle, home to around 8,000 migrants who were relocated to temporary units

October 17, 1902: The first Cadillac automobile was manufactured in Detroit. Always a luxury brand, the picture above shows the classic tail fins of the 1959 Coupe de Ville

October 18, 1867: The United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2m, or approximately two cents an acre. The handover ceremony, in Sitka, is commemorated each year

October 19, 1987: Wall Street stocks plunged a record 22.6% on “Black Monday”, worse even than the crash of 1929 which ushered in the Great Depression of the 1930s

October 20 1827: The last major naval battle between wooden ships took place at Navarino during the Greek War of Independence. Greece’s allies destroyed the Turkish fleet

October 21, 1879: Thomas Edison successfully tested the world’s first electric lightbulb. The incandescent lamp, with a carbonised filament, stayed alight for just over 13 hours
