October 15, 1542: Akbar the Great, the third Mughal emperor, was born. Under his rule the empire expanded to encompass most of northern and central India
October 16, 2016: French authorities began clearing the makeshift camp at Calais known as the Jungle, home to around 8,000 migrants who were relocated to temporary units
October 17, 1902: The first Cadillac automobile was manufactured in Detroit. Always a luxury brand, the picture above shows the classic tail fins of the 1959 Coupe de Ville
October 18, 1867: The United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2m, or approximately two cents an acre. The handover ceremony, in Sitka, is commemorated each year

October 20 1827: The last major naval battle between wooden ships took place at Navarino during the Greek War of Independence. Greece’s allies destroyed the Turkish fleet
October 21, 1879: Thomas Edison successfully tested the world’s first electric lightbulb. The incandescent lamp, with a carbonised filament, stayed alight for just over 13 hours
