U.S. slaps tariffs on Bombardier jets

By Duncan Mil

September 27, 2017 - The U.S. has hit Montreal-based Bombardier with punitive import tariffs of up to 219.63% after Boeing alleged its rival could sell its regional C Series jets at below cost because of subsidies from the UK and Canada.

C Series final assembly is done in Mirabel, north of Montreal. The fuselage and cockpit are manufactured at another Montreal facility, while a plant in Belfast, Northern Ireland, assembles the wings.

The decision could put at risk some of Bombardier’s 28,000 aerospace jobs and threaten the jobs of 4,500 people at its Belfast plant and some 9,500 in the supply chain.

Boeing employs around 16,500 people in the UK.
