How North Korea could pull off a Pacific nuclear test

By Mike Tyler

September 26, 2017 - North Korea’s threat to conduct an atmospheric test of a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean would likely involve launching a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile over Japan.

No country has carried out an atmospheric nuclear test since China detonated a device within its own territory in 1980. North Korea’s six nuclear tests to date have all been underground, the most recent earlier this month by far its largest.

The intensifying war of words between the United States and North Korea and increased shows of force raise the likelihood that an accident or miscalculation could lead to conflict.
