8.2 magnitude earthquake hits southern Mexico

By Duncan Mil

September 8, 2017 - A powerful earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mexico late on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake caused buildings to sway in Mexico’s capital some 1,000km away.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake's magnitude as 8.1, but President Enrique Pena Nieto says it was 8.2, making it the largest in Mexico in 100 years.

The Associated Press reports the quake struck at 11:49 pm Thursday local time with its epicenter 165 kilometers (102 miles) west of Tapachula in Chiapas, not far from Guatemala. It had a depth of 69.7 kilometers (43.31 miles).
