Trump’s TV ratings stumble

By Duncan Mil

August 24, 2017 - Nearly 28 million Americans tuned in to watch President Donald Trump’s Afghanistan speech, 32 percent fewer viewers than President Obama’s 2009 Afghanistan speech attracted, according to Nielsen.

Trump regularly boasted during the 2016 campaign that his events brought news networks high ratings.

Monday night’s prime-time speech attracted 17 million viewers aged 55 and older and 7.1 million aged 35-54. By comparison, just 2.1 million of the 70 million Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 watched the speech on television.

Trump’s joint address to Congress on February 28 drew 47.7 million viewers across the broadcast and cable networks but fell short of President Obama’s first address to Congress in 2009, which drew 52.4 million viewers at a time when video streaming wasn’t as popular as it is today.

An estimated 30.6 million people tuned in to watch Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration in January 2017, 19 percent fewer than the 37.8 million viewers who watched Obama’s inauguration in 2009.
