September 6, 1522: The Vittoria, captained by Juan Sebastian Del Cano since the death of Magellan, returned to Seville after completing the first circumnavigation of the world
September 7, 1907: The Cunard liner Lusitania set sail on its maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York. The ship was torpedoed by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland in 1915
September 8, 2016: Genetic analysis revealed that the giraffe genus, previously thought to contain one extant species, actually consisted of four, that had not exchanged genetic information between each other for 1-2 million years
September 9, 1087: William the Conqueror, who became King of England after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, died in Rouen, France, following a fall from his horse
