This week features the Beslan school hostage crisis, the use of the National Guard to prevent black students entering a formerly white-only school in Little Rock, U.S., the attack of Israeli athletes by Arab terrorists at the Olympic village in Munich, the first circumnavigation of the world, the departure of the Cunard liner Lusitania which was subsequently sunk by a German submarine, the discovery that the giraffe genus contained four exact species, and the death of William the Conqueror, King of England following a fall from his horse.

September 3, 2004: The school hostage crisis in Beslan ended tragically when 330 people, over half of them children, died in bomb explosions or fierce gunbattles between the terrorists and Russian security forces

September 4, 1957: Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus ordered National Guard troops to turn away nine black students trying to enter the formerly whites-only Central High School in Little Rock

September 5, 1972: The Olympic Games was shattered when Arab terrorists of the Black September movement attacked an Israeli dormitory in the Olympic village at Munich

September 8, 2016: Genetic analysis revealed that the giraffe genus, previously thought to contain one extant species, actually consisted of four, that had not exchanged genetic information between each other for 1-2 million years

September 9, 1087: William the Conqueror, who became King of England after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, died in Rouen, France, following a fall from his horse
