August 27, 1993: Japan’s famous suspension bridge across Tokyo Bay opened. The Rainbow Bridge is lit by red, white and green lights using solar energy obtained during the day

August 28, 1967: Charles Darrow, inventor of the board game Monopoly, died. Launched in 1935, the game’s success made Darrow the first ever millionaire game designer

August 29, 2007: A Yangtze River dolphin, or baiji, was spotted in Anhui, China. The species had recently been declared functionally extinct, its decline due to human activity

August 30, 2015: The ancient temple of Bel in Palmyra was destroyed by so-called Islamic State militants, one week after they also blew up the temple of Baalshamin

August 31, 1997: Diana, Princess of Wales, her friend Dodi Fayed and their driver were killed in a high-speed car crash in Paris while being pursued by paparazzi photographers
