Iran plans land bridge to Mediterranean Sea

By Duncan Mil

July 20, 2017 - Iran is seeking to establish a land corridor to the Mediterranean to enlarge its regional influence. Tehran is also reportedly building weapons factories in Lebanon to supply Hezbollah with missiles.

Recently the head of the Israel Defense Forces' Military Intelligence Directorate, Maj. Gen. Herzi Halevi, confirmed the existence of at least one Iranian weapons facility in Lebanon.

The French magazine Intelligence Online published a report identifying the locations of two weapons factories and the munitions they produce. “The first factory, close to Hermel, in the eastern part of the Bekaa Valley, will produce missiles such as the Al Fateh 110.”

A second factory located near the Mediterranean, between Saida (Sidon) and Tyre, manufactures smaller munitions, according to Intelligence Online.

Fateh 110 medium-range missiles — which can carry a warhead of 500-650 kilogrammes — put most of Israel in range.
