August 13, 2016: U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps ended his record-breaking career by winning a 23rd gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio. It took his overall medal tally to 28

August 14, 1947: Pakistan came into existence, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, satisfying demands for a separate Muslim state on the eve of India’s independence from Britain
August 15, 1947: India gained independence from Britain, partitioned into separate states of India and Pakistan. Up to a million civilians died in the mass migration and riots that followed

August 16, 1977: Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, died at his Graceland mansion at age 42. He died from heart failure brought on by abuse of prescription drugs

August 17, 1962: Peter Fechter, 18, was shot by East German guards as he tried to flee across the Berlin Wall. He bled to death in the most notorious case in the history of the wall

August 18, 1937: American actor Robert Redford, star of movies such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting and All the President’s Men, was born

August 19, 1839: Louis Jacques Daguerre showed his first “daguerreotype” photograph in Paris. Above is an early daguerreotype showing the Tuileries Palace in the city
