Nobel laureate released from prison after cancer diagnosis

June 26, 2017 - Chinese civil rights campaigner and Nobel peace prize winner Liu Xiaobo has been released from prison on medical parole after being diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. Liu, 61, jailed in 2009 on subversion charges for calling for greater democracy, was a key leader in the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.
