July 23, 2017 - July 29, 2017 - This week features the first fatality caused by doping in the Tour de France, the world’s largest reflecting telescope in La Palma, the European Coal and Steel Community which was the forerunner to the European Union, the circumnavigation of the earth by Solar Impulse 2, the swimming records of Michael Phelps, renaming Bombay, India as Mumbai, and the Spanish Armada sent by Spain to invade England.

July 23, 1967: British cyclist Tom Simpson collapsed and died on Mont Ventoux during the Tour de France. It was the first fatality in the race to be caused by doping
July 24, 2009: King Juan Carlos of Spain inaugurated the Gran Telescopio Canarias, the world’s largest reflecting telescope, sited atop an extinct volcano in La Palma

July 25, 1952: The European Coal and Steel Community, established by the Treaty of Paris in 1951 and the forerunner of the European Union, came into force

July 26, 2016: The solar-powered aircraft Solar Impulse 2, pictured over San Francisco, landed in Abu Dhabi after completing the first fuel-free circumnavigation of the Earth
