July 2, 2017 - July 8, 2017 - This week features the aviator Amelia Earhart, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge in Istanbul, NASA’s Juno spacecraft, the Shard in London, the end of London’s trams, the artist Marc Chagall, and the unveiling of the 787 Dreamliner

July 2, 1937: Aviator Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, vanished over the Pacific Ocean as they tried to make the first flight around the world flight at the equator

July 3, 1988: The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge was completed in Istanbul, Turkey, providing a second crossing between Europe and Asia over the Bosphorus

July 4, 2016: NASA’s Juno spacecraft successfully entered orbit around Jupiter at the start of a 20-month survey to study the planet’s composition and magnetic field

July 5, 2012: The Shard was inaugurated in London. At 310m (1,020ft) high, it was the tallest building in Europe until overtaken by the 338m Mercury City Tower in Moscow

July 6, 1952: London’s last trams were withdrawn from service after almost a century in operation. The first trams, which appeared in 1861, were horse-drawn

July 7, 1887: Marc Chagall, Russian-French artist associated with several major styles and one of the most successful artists of the 20th century, was born

July 8, 2007: Boeing unveiled its new 787 Dreamliner, touted as the world’s most environmentally friendly airliner. It claimed to use 20% less fuel than other planes of its size
