U.S. sending third carrier strike group to Western Pacific

By Duncan Mil

June 1, 2017 - The U.S. is sending a third carrier strike group -- led by the USS Nimitz -- to join the Carl Vinson and Ronald Reagan strike groups near North Korea to pressure Pyongyang to refrain from more missile tests.

It is rare for the U.S. Navy to deploy three aircraft carriers to the same region at the same time. The decision means that more than 200 aircraft, along with six Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers and 14 Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, will be within striking distance of North Korea.

Pyongyang has fired 12 missiles during nine tests in 2017, bringing the number of launches to 78 since North Korean President Kim Jong-un came to power in December 2011.

Kim has also conducted three nuclear tests, bring the total to five since 2006.
