Japan’s first abdication of emperor in 200 years

May 19, 2017 - Japan's government has approved a bill to let Emperor Akihito abdicate and allow Crown Prince Naruhito to ascend the Chrysanthemum Throne. The abdication will be Japan’s first in 200 years.

The emperor is expected to abdicate in December 2018, when he will turn 85, in favour of his oldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito
