May 21, 2017 - May 27, 2017 - This week features the first nation to legalise same-sex marriage, the election of Mohammed Khatami as the president of Iran and Mikhail Gorbachev as president of the Soviet Union, the opening of Westminster Bridge in London and the reconstruction of Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, the Frisbee and the analysis of a 35,000 year-old wolf bone.

May 21, 2015: A 35,000 year-old wolf bone discovered in Siberia, with DNA split between dog and wolf, suggested the domestication of dogs began much earlier than previously thought

May 22, 2015: Ireland became the first nation to legalise same-sex marriage in a popular vote, with over 62 percent in favour of amending the constitution

May 23, 1997: Mohammed Khatami, a moderate keen to improve economic ties with the West, was elected President of Iran

May 24, 1862: Westminster Bridge opened over the River Thames in London. It now links the Palace of Westminster on the north side of the river with the London Eye on the south

May 25, 1989: Mikhail Gorbachev was elected president of the Soviet Union

May 26, 1959: A U.S. toy firm registered the trade mark Frisbee for its flying disc

May 27, 1997: A reconstruction of the Globe theatre opened in London with Shakespeare’s Henry V, some 400 years after the play was first staged at the original Globe
