Emmanuel Macron's inner circle

By Duncan Mil

May 8, 2017 - Emmanuel Macron and his allies are about to take control of the EU’s third-biggest economy, behind Germany and the United Kingdom. Now they are going to be making decisions that will affect a nation with a gross domestic product of €2.2 trillion.

Macron’s economic programme of overhauling the labour market, simplifying tax and pension systems and cutting regulations, has been put together by Jean-Pisani Ferry, an economist who has worked for the IMF and is the former head of Brussels-based Bruegel, a think tank.

However, to push through his reform agenda, he needs to secure parliamentary backing in legislative elections in June.

The first opinion polls for the parliamentary election show Macron’s new movement “En Marche!” (Onwards!) could win between 249 and 286 mainland France seats in the 577-seat National Assembly.
