Prince Philip to step down in August

By Duncan Mil

May 4, 2017 - Buckingham Palace has announced that the Duke of Edinburgh will retire from royal duties in the autumn.

The Palace statement said it was the Duke’s personal decision, taken with the support of the Queen.

The Duke, who turns 96 on June 10, will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August but will not accept new invitations. He carried out 110 days of engagements in 2016. He is patron, president or a member of more than 780 organisations and will continue to be associated with them, but will no longer play an active role by attending engagements, Buckingham Palace said.

Prince Philip has been an almost constant presence at the Queen’s side throughout her 65-year reign. But it hasn’t all been plain sailing -- he is known for being one of the most gaffe-prone members of the royal family. His reputation for plain speaking has often led to controversy but he has also been branded a “national treasure” by the press for his inability to curb his off-the-cuff remarks.

In 1956 he launched the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, in which over four million young people in over 140 nations have taken part to date.

The Duke and the Queen celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on November 20 this year.
