April 20-28, 2017 -- South Indian blockbuster, “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” will be released in high-quality IMAX format in India, Malaysia, France, the UAE and U.S., in a bid to wean Indian audiences from Hollywood blockbusters. “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” is released on April 28.

The much anticipated blockbuster is only the third Indian film to be released in the giant IMAX screen format. Directed by S.S. Rajamouli and produced by Arka Mediaworks, “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” is the sequel to the Telugu-language “Baahubali: The Beginning” which was a 2015 global sensation that underscored the talent of Indian cinema from beyond Hindi-language Bollywood.

The Tollywood movie again stars Telugu superstar Prabhas, along with Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia.

Indian box office fell 1.9% in 2016 to $1.5 billion (Rs 9 billion).

In China, Hollywood studios accounted for 41.7 percent of the total box office last year, earning $2.7 billion (RMB19.06 billion), compared to $2.6 billion (RMB16.99 billion) in 2015, despite the less favourable exchange rates.

The year’s top films included Stephen Chow’s “The Mermaid,” which, watched by more than 92 million people, second place went to Disney’s “Zootopia,” followed by “The Great Wall.”

Japanese box office rose 8 percent in 2016 to $2.08 billion (235.51 billion yen), boosted by a succession of local hits including “Your Name” and “Shin Godzilla.”
