March 19, 1932: Australia’s iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge officially opened. It is the world’s tallest steel arch bridge, rising 134m (440ft) above water level at its highest point

March 20, 2016: Barack Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Cuba since 1928, cementing a thaw in U.S.-Cuba relations after more than 50 years of enmity

March 21, 1617: Pocahontas, daughter of a Native American chief who saved the life of a colonist about to be executed by her tribe, died on a visit to England at age 22

March 22, 1997: The Hale-Bopp comet, returning from the outer solar system for its first pass of the sun in 4,200 years, made its closest approach to Earth, about 122 million miles

March 23, 1997: American Tara Lipinski became the youngest ever world figure skating champion, aged 14. She went on to win Olympic gold in Nagano the following year

March 24, 2016: Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff died from cancer at age 68. He made his name with Ajax and Barcelona and was European footballer of the year three times

March 25 1942: Aretha Franklin, U.S. singer and songwriter whose wide-ranging repertoire includes soul, jazz, blues, and gospel music, was born in Memphis, Tennessee
