U.S. defence budget hike
February 28, 2017 - President Donald Trump plans a $54 billion surge in the U.S. defence budget -- a nine percent increase -- paid for by slashing domestic programmes and foreign assistance.
Departments fearing deep cuts to match the military increase include the Environmental Protection Agency’s $8.3 billion budget, the $42.4bn Foreign Assistance allocation and NASA’s $19.3bn budget.
America’s military spending already dwarfs the combined defence spending of the next 14 nations, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies Military Balance 2017 report, which monitors the changing nature of military power.
