Pukguksong-2 missile test

Graphic News

February 13, 2017 -- North Korea’s claim that it has successfully tested a new ballistic missile powered by solid fuel is a potentially worrying development in its quest to develop a weapon system that could threaten the U.S. and its allies.

Images released by Korean state media show the Pukguksong-2 launched from a so-called “cold launch” canister system carried on a mobile launcher.

Cold-launch technology – where a missile is ejected from its container by compressed gas before its engine ignites – is used for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). Cold launch ensures the hot exhaust doesn't destroy the launch tube and the submarine.

The Pukguksong-2 was of the same type as one test-fired from a submarine off the east coast in August 2016.
