January 22, 2017 - January 28, 2017 - This week features "Bloody Sunday" in St Petersburg, birth of Princess Caroline of Monaco, patenting of Eskimo Pie, the first Grand Slam win of Martina Hingis, the first settlers to Australia, the death of astronauts at a simulated launch in Cape Canaveral, the death of King Henry Viii of England.

January 22, 1905: Troops in St Petersburg opened fire on a 1,000-strong procession of unarmed workers, killing over 200. “Bloody Sunday” marked the start of Russia’s 1905 revolution

January 23, 1957: Princess Caroline of Monaco, first child of Prince Rainier and his wife, former film star Grace Kelly, was born in Monte Carlo. She celebrates her 60th birthday today

January 24, 1922: Eskimo Pie, a vanilla ice cream bar covered with chocolate, was patented in the U.S. by Danish immigrant Christian K. Nelson, a teacher and candy store owner

January 25, 1997: Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis, aged only 16, captured the Australian Open title to become the youngest Grand Slam singles winner of the 20th century

January 26, 1788: The first European settlers in Australia, led by Captain Arthur Phillip and including 700 convicts transported from England, landed in present-day Sydney

January 27, 1967: U.S. astronauts Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee died in a flash fire aboard Apollo 1 during a simulated launch at Cape Canaveral

January 28, 1547: King Henry VIII of England, best remembered for his six wives and separation of the Church of England from papal authority, died in London after a 38-year reign
