January 9, 2017 -- Since the NAFTA trade deal came into force in 1994, Mexico has become the world’s seventh-largest car manufacturer and fourth-largest exporter. Its plants and supply chain support more than 750,000 jobs.

Over the past week, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly tweeted his threat to impose a tax of 35 percent on BMW, Ford, General Motors and Toyota if they try to export cars from plants in Mexico to the U.S. market.

BMW has said that it is “absolutely” committed to a new $1 billion plant in Mexico’s San Luis Potosi. The new facility will make its 3 Series sedans for sale across North America.
