Monju nuclear reactor timeline

By Mike Tyler

October 7, 2016 - After almost $10 billion in spending, Japan looks set to shut down its troubled Monju nuclear power plant. The prototype sodium-cooled fast reactor has operated for only 250 days since it went online in 1994.

The Monju plutonium-fueled breeder reactor in Tsuruga has been kept offline following a massive 1995 sodium leak (700kg of molten sodium) and fire, and subsequent cover-up attempt, repeated failures and safety problems.
