By Jordi Bou

September 24, 2016 - October 5, 2016 - Delegates from 183 countries discuss urgent ways to tackle illegal trade in wildlife at the 17th meeting of the UN’s Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). COP 17 in Johannesburg includes proposals by Namibia and Zimbabwe to sell African ivory stockpiles; a proposal by Swaziland for permission to sell rhino horn from its stockpile to international buyers; and initiatives to bring greater protection to sharks and pangolins, a small, scaly animal regarded as the world's most illegally trafficked mammal.
