Pyongyang hails nuclear test
September 9, 2016 - North Korea says it has successfully carried out its fifth and largest test of a nuclear device. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake, which was recorded at 00:30GMT, with a magnitude of 5.3.
Jeffrey Lewis of the California-based Middlebury Institute of International Studies told Reuters that the seismic magnitude indicated a blast with a 20- to 30-kilotonne yield, larger than the atom bomb dropped by the U.S. on the Japanese city of Hiroshima in World War Two.
"The important thing is that five tests in, they now have a lot of nuclear test experience. They aren't a backwards state any more," Lewis said.
