EUROPE
2015 asylum applications
September 16, 2015 - More than 500,000 asylum seekers have arrived in Europe since January, with the majority from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Nigeria and Somalia. Nine countries have received almost 90 percent of applications.
European Union interior ministers will hold an emergency meeting on September 22 to address the refugee crisis.
In an emergency session on Monday, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s plan to relocate 120,000 migrants under a compulsory scheme – bringing the total proposed number up to 160,000 – failed with several ex-Communist central European states rejecting mandatory quotas.
